If you run a clinic in Indore, a coaching centre in Kota, a hardware shop in Rajkot or a small export firm in Tiruppur, your website has one job: get found by people nearby who are ready to call, visit or WhatsApp you. You do not need an agency retainer or an expensive toolkit to do the basics well. You need a clear checklist and a free WordPress SEO plugin that covers the technical side.

This guide is that checklist. It is written for Indian small businesses on WordPress, and most of it applies whichever SEO plugin you use. Where a step needs a plugin, we show how to do it with Impex Rank SEO, the free plugin we build in Rajkot, Gujarat.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile first

For "near me" and "in [city]" searches, your Google Business Profile often matters more than your website. Claim it, verify it, and fill in everything: categories, service areas, hours, photos and products or services. Link it to your website.

The most important rule is NAP consistency: your Name, Address and Phone number should be written exactly the same way everywhere, on your profile, on your website footer, in your schema and in directories. "Shop No. 4, Gandhi Road" and "4, Gandhi Rd." look like two businesses to a machine. Pick one format and stick to it.

2. Add LocalBusiness schema

Schema is structured data that tells search engines, in a machine-readable format, who you are and where you are. For a local business it should include your business type, name, address, phone and location.

In Impex Rank SEO, go to Impex Rank SEO → Local SEO, tick Enable Local Business schema (it is off by default, so nothing is output until you switch it on), and fill in:

  • Business type: LocalBusiness, ProfessionalService, Store, Restaurant, MedicalBusiness, LegalService, HomeAndConstructionBusiness and others.
  • Phone: in international format, for example +91 98xxx xxxxx.
  • Street address, city, region/state and postal code (your PIN code), exactly as on your Google Business Profile.
  • Country code: IN.
  • Latitude and longitude: in Google Maps, right-click your location and copy the coordinates.

The plugin outputs this as part of a connected JSON-LD graph with your organisation, website and pages. After saving, test your home page with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

3. Write titles that say what and where

Your page titles are the blue links people see in search results. For a local business, a clear pattern works well:

Service + City | Business name

For example, "Dental Implants in Vadodara | Shah Dental Care". Keep titles under about 60 characters so they are not cut off, and write a meta description that gives a reason to click: experience, timings, a free consultation, or "call or WhatsApp".

Impex Rank SEO shows a live Google preview in the post editor with character counters, and lets you set title templates for whole sections of your site from the Titles & Metas screen.

4. City pages: only when they are genuinely different

It is tempting to create "Plumber in Ahmedabad", "Plumber in Gandhinagar" and "Plumber in Surat" pages by copying one page and swapping the city name. Search engines treat that as thin, near-duplicate content, and those pages rarely rank.

Create a separate city page only when you have something specific to say: a branch address, the team that serves that area, projects you completed there, local pricing or travel charges, or photos from real jobs. Otherwise, one strong service page that lists your service areas is better.

5. Use the language your customers search in

Many Indian searches happen in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and other languages, or in a mix with English. If your customers speak a regional language, consider pages in that language rather than relying on machine translation widgets.

A practical note: many SEO tools count words by splitting on Latin-alphabet rules and report zero words for Devanagari or Gujarati text, which makes every length check fail. Impex Rank SEO counts words correctly in non-Latin scripts, so its content analyser gives meaningful scores on regional-language posts.

6. Make the site fast on mobile data

Most of your visitors are on phones, often on mobile data in places where the signal varies. A heavy home page with a large slider, auto-playing video and five tracking scripts loses people before it loads.

  • Compress images before uploading, and avoid full-width sliders.
  • Use a lightweight theme and remove plugins you do not use.
  • Use your host's caching, or a caching plugin.
  • Test with Google PageSpeed Insights. Impex Rank SEO can run this check for mobile and desktop from your dashboard or the post editor, when you click the check button.

7. Make it easy to contact you

SEO brings visitors; your page has to turn them into enquiries. Put your phone number in the header as a tap-to-call link, show your address and a map on the contact page, and add a WhatsApp click-to-chat button if your customers prefer it (many do). Make sure the phone number on the page matches the one in your schema and Google profile.

8. List your business in reputable directories

Local citations, meaning mentions of your business name, address and phone on other sites, help search engines confirm you are real and where you are. Indian examples include Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and the relevant trade or professional association directories for your industry. Use the same NAP format everywhere, and avoid paid link schemes that promise hundreds of listings overnight.

9. Earn reviews honestly

Reviews on your Google Business Profile influence both rankings and whether people choose you. Ask happy customers directly, send them the review link after a job, and reply to every review, including the critical ones. Never buy reviews or offer discounts for five-star ratings; it breaks platform rules and customers can usually tell.

10. Cover the technical basics once

These are set-and-forget tasks, and a free plugin handles them:

  • XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Impex Rank SEO creates it at /impex-sitemap.xml.
  • Redirects when you change a page's address, so old links still work. Impex Rank SEO creates a 301 automatically when you change a published post's slug, and logs 404 errors so you can fix them.
  • Open Graph tags so your pages look right when shared on WhatsApp and Facebook.
  • Webmaster verification codes for Google and Bing on the Tools screen.

What a small business actually needs to pay for

Very little. Every SEO module in Impex Rank SEO is free on unlimited sites: titles and metas, schema including LocalBusiness and FAQ, sitemaps, redirects, the 404 monitor, IndexNow, image SEO, the content analyser and the bulk editor. Two automations have a small free monthly allowance: the AI writer (three articles a month, using your own AI provider key) and the one-click optimiser (three optimised posts a month).

If you later want unlimited AI articles, scheduled publishing and the other automations, the optional Impex Rank SEO Pro add-on is sold on wprank.in and billed in Indian rupees through CCAvenue, with a one-time Lifetime plan. See pricing. For many small businesses, the free plugin plus a few hours of your own time each month is enough.

Why a free plugin may suit you: you pay nothing to start, you are not locked into a subscription, and your SEO data stays in your own WordPress database. Whichever plugin you choose, the checklist above is where the results come from.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid SEO plugin for a small business website?

Usually not. Titles, meta descriptions, schema, sitemaps and redirects are available in free plugins, including Impex Rank SEO. Paid add-ons mostly sell automation and convenience, which a small site can often do without.

How do I show my business address to Google from WordPress?

Add LocalBusiness schema with your exact business name, address, PIN code and phone number, and keep them identical to your Google Business Profile. In Impex Rank SEO this is on the Local SEO screen.

Should I make a separate page for every city I serve?

Only when each page has genuinely different content, such as a real local address, team, projects or prices. Copies of one page with the city name swapped are thin content and rarely help.

Can I write my website in Hindi or Gujarati and still do SEO?

Yes. Search engines index regional-language pages, and many Indian searches happen in those languages. Impex Rank SEO counts words correctly in Hindi, Gujarati and other non-Latin scripts, so its length checks work.

Is Impex Rank SEO Pro billed in rupees?

Yes. The optional Pro add-on is sold on wprank.in with payment in INR through CCAvenue. The free plugin on WordPress.org costs nothing and does not need Pro.
